The Grand Imam: The relationship between East and West must be based on the respect of cultures and values

His Eminence Dr Ahmed El-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders today hosted Gyde Jensen, chairwoman of the German Bundestag's Committee on Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid along with an accompanying delegation currently visiting Egypt.

During the meeting, His Eminence said, “Islam calls for the respect of all human rights, in particular the freedom of religion and belief which is proven by various Quranic verses and the practices of Muslims throughout history.”

The Grand Imam added, “The relationship between East and West must be based on the respect of cultures and values. We also call for a shift away from hegemonic policies and unilateral teachings that reject dialogue with others.”

Members of the German Bundestag’s Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid Committee delegation stressed their willingness to benefit from the views of the Grand Imam as one of the most prominent international figures calling for peace and dialogue. The delegation also praised His Eminence’s message that calls for the respect of all faiths and religions.
