Did Digital Platforms Do Justice to Arabic Poetry? A Cultural Seminar at the Muslim Council of Elders’ Pavilion at the Cairo International Book Fair

03 February 2026

The pavilion of the Muslim Council of Elders held its thirteenth cultural seminar at the 57th Cairo International Book Fair, titled: “In the Age of Digital Platforms - How Do We Appreciate Arabic Poetry?”, with the participation of poet Mahmoud Salam Abu Malik. The discussion was moderated by Yasmine Obeid, a member of the Emerging Peacemakers Forum.

The seminar shed light on the presence of Arabic poetry in the digital space and the role of modern platforms in rediscovering literary aesthetics and strengthening younger generations’ connection to the Arabic language. It emphasized that appreciating poetry is not a cultural luxury but a means of reviving the language within hearts and rejuvenating Arab culture, as poetry is a foundational witness to the sciences of grammar, linguistics, and rhetoric.

Mahmoud Salam stressed that Arabic poetry serves as a bridge linking generations to their cultural, intellectual, and linguistic heritage. He warned against the dangers of cultural emptiness affecting younger generations and how it can make them more susceptible to Westernization and detachment from their identity.

Salam also explained that social media does not conflict with appreciating poetry; rather, it can be used positively and effectively when filled with quality content. He pointed out that these platforms have helped promote many beneficial sciences and arts and can serve as a space to showcase the beauty of Arabic poetry. He called on content creators to present valuable knowledge in engaging and appealing ways that capture the attention of audiences—especially youth and children.

He further advised the importance of training children to appreciate eloquence, poetry, and the beauty of the Arabic language through digital tools and innovative, attractive methods that help instill a love for language and poetry from an early age.
