On the International Day of Education - The Muslim Council of Elders affirms that education is a fundamental human right and a cornerstone for the progress and prosperity of nations

The Muslim Council of Elders, under the chairmanship of His Eminence Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, emphasizes that education is a fundamental human right and a cornerstone for building the progress and prosperity of nations and peoples. The council calls on relevant international organizations and institutions to intensify their efforts to ensure the provision of education for vulnerable and economically disadvantaged groups who cannot access it, promoting inclusivity and equality in learning opportunities.

In a statement on the International Day of Education, observed on January 24 of each year, the Muslim Council of Elders highlighted that the Islamic religion encourages seeking knowledge, considering it the legacy of the prophets. The first verse revealed in the Quran commands reading, which is the key to all knowledge, as stated: "Read in the name of your Lord who created." Islam has made the pursuit of knowledge a path to paradise, as mentioned in the noble hadith: "Whoever treads a path in seeking knowledge, Allah will make easy for him the path to Paradise" (Narrated by Muslim). Allah, the Most High, has elevated the status of knowledge and scholars, stating: "Allah raises those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge by degrees" and also stating: "Say, 'Are those who know equal to those who do not know?' Only they will be reminded who are people of understanding."

Therefore, the Muslim Council of Elders reiterates its firm rejection of depriving girls and women of education, which is a fundamental right guaranteed by Islamic Sharia. It also affirms the commitment to the Document on Human Fraternity, co-signed by His Eminence Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, and Pope Francis of the Catholic Church, in Abu Dhabi in 2019. The document emphasizes that education is a fundamental right for all humans and should not be denied to anyone, especially women and children. Education is also instrumental in creating an enlightened generation capable of carrying the message of fraternity, coexistence, and peace.

The council exerts significant efforts in raising awareness about the importance of education and disseminating moderate and enlightened thinking through its various initiatives. With over 220 publications, the council aims to correct misconceptions, confront extremist ideologies, and address all forms of hatred, bigotry, and discrimination. Additionally, the council participates in numerous international book fairs, including the Cairo International Book Fair, which begins today and runs until February 6, as part of its mission to promote peace and spread the values of dialogue, tolerance, and coexistence.
