February 4, 2024 - Abu Dhabi:

His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, has affirmed that “The Abu Dhabi Document on Human Fraternity reflects the vision of His Holiness Pope Francis, Pontiff of the Catholic Church, and His Eminence Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, who are strongly supported by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates. This significant Document conveys to the entire world the commitment of His Highness and the people of the United Arab Emirates to tolerance, fraternity, and ethical action. We, nationals of the United Arab Emirates, are truly fortunate to witness the vision and wisdom of His Highness the President of the State. We seize this opportunity to express our deep appreciation for his wise leadership, transforming the United Arab Emirates into a safe, tolerant, and prosperous country.”

This statement was made during the inauguration by His Excellency of the Human Fraternity Majlis, organized by the Muslim Council of Elders in collaboration with the UAE’s Ministry of Tolerance and Coexistence and the Higher Committee of Human Fraternity, under the auspices of the Abrahamic Family House in Abu Dhabi. The establishment of this Majlis, which includes prominent global figures and entities, represents a unique initiative aimed at enhancing dialogue and cooperation among leaders from diverse backgrounds. Its launch during the celebration of the fifth anniversary of the signing of the Document on Human Fraternity, which emphasizes shared values and the interconnectedness of humanity, marks an important occasion which in turn contributes to the Human Fraternity Majlis' efforts to highlight the interconnectedness among the diverse visions from around the world. During the opening session, Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra, the Substitute of the Secretariat of State of the Holy See, delivered a speech.

In his opening remarks at the Human Fraternity Majlis, His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak added, “It is my pleasure to join you at the Abrahamic Family House, a distinctive symbol of mutual understanding, harmonious coexistence, and peace among diverse religious followers and those with benevolent intentions, to celebrate the International Day of Human Fraternity. We at the Ministry of Tolerance and Coexistence are pleased to partner with the Muslim Council of Elders in organizing this important majlis for human fraternity, which coincides with the fifth anniversary of the issuance of the historic Abu Dhabi Document on Human Fraternity in 2019. The United Arab Emirates played a significant role in mobilizing the United Nations to officially designate February 4th, the day the document was launched, as an International Day of Human Fraternity. In the UAE, we are committed to making tolerance, peaceful coexistence, and human fraternity an integral part of our society, and we are equally committed to sharing these values with the world.

His Excellency clarified that in the United Arab Emirates, tolerance and human fraternity serve as the bridges that connect its diverse inhabitants. We all respect each other due to our mutual commitment to tolerance and human fraternity, he emphasized. Addressing a question many have pondered over the past five years regarding the difference, if any, between tolerance and human fraternity, His Excellency said, I seize this opportunity to share some of my thoughts on this distinction. Of course, my reflections are based on our own experience, as well as the contributions of many individuals who have addressed this topic since the issuance of the Document on Human Fraternity in 2019.

Firstly, human fraternity represents the meaningful bond within the context of human diversity. At its core lies the understanding of our shared humanity and the principle that what unites us far outweighs what divides us. Human fraternity underscores our interconnectedness and mutual dependence, obliging us to collaborate on addressing urgent global issues and challenges. On the other hand, tolerance is an individual's capacity to accept the diversity and differences of others without subjecting them to criticism or offense. Tolerance encourages us to embrace diversity even when we cannot understand it; it is about the actions we refrain from taking.

His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak further added, We live in a world where everyone acknowledges diversity but tends to approach it through a narrow religious, cultural, ethnic, and economic lens. Diversity is a global fact, while interconnectedness is different. Human fraternity provides the energy, will, and even the courage to achieve interconnectedness amidst diversity. Human fraternity is not merely tolerance; it is the continuous pursuit of understanding across lines of difference. Tolerance alone does not erase our ignorance of each other. It perpetually carries the risk of reinforcing stereotypes, half-truths, and the fears and concerns that underlie traditional forms of division and violence.

His Excellency clarified that this insight guides the mission of the Ministry of Tolerance and Coexistence, interpreting tolerance as synonymous with human fraternity. This perspective led to the inclusion of ‘Coexistence in the ministry's name, emphasizing an active effort to engage with the diverse elements of society. This approach strengthens commitment to interconnectedness and the embodiment of tolerance, understanding, shared responsibilities, and mutual respect for all. This stems from the principle that coexistence is the core of human fraternity. His Excellency further highlighted that this perspective dovetails with a key aspect of human fraternity: it does not require us to abandon our identities and commitments but demands that we affirm, interpret, and re-evaluate our commitments while getting to know others. It involves holding onto our differences—be they cultural, religious, ethnic, or economic— not in isolation, but through ongoing interaction with each other. Human fraternity does not seek to erase diversity; it welcomes it, enriching both society and the global community. Human fraternity does not eliminate diversity; it embraces it, for the benefit of society and the world at large.

His Excellency added that human fraternity also necessitates dialogue, which involves speaking and listening, writing and reading, giving and taking, and unveils both shared understandings and genuine differences. Dialogue is not just about reaching a consensus at the same table but about our ability to genuinely listen and attempt to understand each other. Therefore, human fraternity demands more than the mere intention to sit together; it requires a pledge to actively engage and deliberate with an open mind.

His Excellency remarked, The concept of human fraternity helps us see that, despite our diversity, we can communicate openly, listen attentively to one another, endeavour to grasp each other's commitments, and seek to uncover and embrace new insights that prompt us to evolve collectively. We believe that human fraternity will make us better individuals. We also believe that our individual and joint endeavours will foster peace and interconnectedness in the worldWe take pride in the annual celebration of the International Day of Human Fraternity at this place of unique humanitarian significance.”

His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan concluded his speech by extending gratitude to all participants for their spirit of tolerance, coexistence, and human fraternity, and their unwavering dedication to human welfare, wishing success for all efforts aimed at advancing global cooperation and understanding.

In his speech, H.E. José Ramos-Horta, President of Timor-Lesteand former Zayed Award for Human Fraternity Judging Committee member, said, “It is my pleasure to be in Abu Dhabi to join you in celebrating the International Day of Human Fraternity and recognizing the honorees of the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity for this year. Our country appreciates the great efforts made by the United Arab Emirates under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in spreading the values of fraternity and coexistence locally and regionally. This has earned the UAE a global reputation as a capital of tolerance and fraternity worldwide.” He further commended the efforts of His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence of the UAE, for his astute guidance of the Ministry of Tolerance and Coexistence towards strengthening the values of coexistence and fraternity both locally and globally.

President of Timor-Leste added, “Working with Judge Mohammed Abdelsalam, the Secretary-General of the Muslim Council of Elders, during my tenure on the Judging Committee for the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity, allowed me a closer acquaintance with this significant historical document signed by His Eminence the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Sheikh Ahmed Al-Tayeb, and His Holiness Pope Francis, Pontiff of the Catholic Church, in the UAE in 2019. This experience inspired me to adopt the principles of the Document on Human Fraternity as a national document in my country, utilizing it to foster the values of coexistence, tolerance, and fraternity among all.” He further pointed out that the Document has been integrated into the curriculum of basic education stages in his country, emphasizing that we all must unite, show solidarity, redouble our efforts, and continue to work towards embedding the values of human fraternity, coexistence, and tolerance. “Our world now, more than ever, needs the activation of these values,” he affirmed.

In his remarks, delivered on behalf of His Excellency Joko Widodo, President of the Republic of Indonesia, delivered on his behalf by His Excellency Dr. Ma'ruf Amin, Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia congratulated the United Arab Emirates and the entire world on the fifth anniversary of the Document on Human Fraternity, signed in 2019 by His Eminence Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, and His Holiness Pope Francis, Pontiff of the Catholic Church, for peace and shared living. He affirmed that the Document continually reminds us of the importance of the values and principles of human fraternity, while also recognizing the diversity of religion and belief. He pointed out that Islam, with its noble principles, consistently calls on humanity to enhance fraternity among themselves, regardless of their backgrounds, beliefs, and cultures.

In a message he sent to the participants of the Human Fraternity Majlis, His Eminence, Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, emphasized, “As we celebrate today the fifth anniversary of the issuance of the Document on Human Fraternity, we affirm that our world has never been in more dire need of reviving the supreme moral principles contained in this Document. Foremost among these is the earnest call to cease wars and conflicts, placing upon us all a significant responsibility, compelling us to continue our efforts in spreading and bolstering the values of human fraternity.”

The Grand Imam extended his gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, the patron and supporter of the Document on Human Fraternity since its launch, committing to its perpetual and generous care. This support has enabled the discovery of human elites who work in silence, dedication, selflessness, and for the sake of Allah Almighty, with respect for human conscience, love for goodness, and those who offer it. These individuals, often away from the spotlight, provide noble humanitarian services to the impoverished and distressed humanity across various parts of the world, regardless of their races, religions, preferences, and backgrounds.

In a message from His Holiness Pope Francis, Pontiff of the Catholic Church, delivered on his behalf by His Eminence Cardinal Miguel Ángel Ayuso Guixot, Prefect of the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue, His Holiness extended his congratulations to all participants in the Human Fraternity Majlis and the organizers of the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity on the occasion of the International Day of Human Fraternity, marking the fifth anniversary of the signing of the Document on Human Fraternity.

His Holiness expressed his delight in the journey of interfaith dialogue, solidarity, and mutual respect that began in Abu Dhabi five years ago and continues to promote tolerance, coexistence, and acceptance of others. He also praised the ongoing efforts and boundless support of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, and His Eminence Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, for their valuable initiatives aimed at advancing the values of human fraternity and social solidarity. These initiatives are based on the concept that humans are not only equal but also closely interconnected as brothers and sisters within one human family. His Holiness emphasized that realizing human fraternity requires recognizing the importance of equality among humans and promoting tolerance and peaceful coexistence.

His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism in Abu Dhabi and President of the Abrahamic Family House, affirmed that as the world becomes increasingly interconnected, there is an urgent need to embrace the spirit of humanity. He further stressed the need to promote collective action, solidarity, dialogue, and appreciation for the similarities and differences among diverse cultures and beliefs. He noted that during its first year, the Abrahamic Family House has achieved significant success in establishing a new spirit of human fraternity, transforming from a mere physical space into a thriving community.

He added that the Human Fraternity Majlis represents the best embodiment of the values of the Abrahamic Family House, welcoming a diverse group of experts to engage in dialogue based on shared faith to promote peaceful coexistence worldwide.

For his part, His Excellency Judge Mohammed Abdelsalam, Secretary-General of the Muslim Council of Elders, emphasized that the convening of the Human Fraternity Majlis, for the first time, with the participation of numerous global leaders and international figures, reflects a strong commitment to the importance of promoting the values of coexistence and peace, building a better future for humanity. He underlined the symbolic meaning of the fifth anniversary of the signing of the Document on Human Fraternity by His Eminence Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, and His Holiness Pope Francis, Pontiff of the Catholic Church. Judge Abdelsalam also noted that signing of the Document remains the most significant and prominent event in the contemporary history of interfaith relations. He added that the Document serves as a source of inspiration through its principles and values, sowing the seeds of trust and optimism in the hearts of people.

Judge Abdelsalam added that five years ago, the Document on Human Fraternity was born out of an idea and a dream, and he felt deeply honored to witness this dream becoming a reality. He further emphasized that the Document conveys a message of hope transcending all religions, underscoring their autonomy and their capacity to coexist harmoniously. He further highlighted that this document stands as the inaugural joint religious message from eminent religious leaders addressing humanity as a collective, irrespective of religious differences, noting that the Document emphasizes that we all are members of a single human family. He commended the United Arab Emirates for its dedication to fostering values of tolerance, coexistence, and peace, under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. He also acknowledged the unwavering support and guidance provided by His Eminence the Grand Imam and His Holiness Pope Francis, particularly during these challenging times our world is experiencing, emphasizing the pressing need to promote the principles and values of human fraternity.

His Excellency Dr. Khaled Al-Ghaith, Secretary-General of the Higher Committee of Human Fraternity, said, “There can be no better embodiment of the meaning of human fraternity than the diverse gathering today for meetings and dialogue on an equal footing. It is based on the common belief in the importance of peaceful coexistence as manifested in the Human Fraternity Majlis. The challenges of modern society require fostering harmony among different cultures, beliefs, and religions to achieve progress and prosperity. It also requires recognizing our shared humanity and embracing the principles of tolerance, compassion, and understanding while promoting a culture of peace and mutual respect.”

His Excellency added, "Through the Human Fraternity Majlis, we have the opportunity to foster these meaningful conversations and build relationships of friendship and mutual understanding.
