Muslim Council of Elders features ‘Islam, the West and Tolerance: Conceiving Coexistence’ on the first day of the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair
The Muslim Council of Elders has hosted a short seminar featuring the author of ‘Islam, the West and Tolerance: Conceiving Coexistence’ Dr. Aaron Tyler, Professor of International Relations and Global Affairs at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas. During the discussion, a number of topics were raised including the role of religious institutions in implementing dialogue and combatting extremism as well as ways to promote coexistence and human fraternity.”
Commenting on the topic of the seminar, Professor Tyler said, “To cultivate meaningful coexistence—whether between individuals, groups, or countries—three things are required. First is a shared desire for peace. Regardless of competing interests, if a desire for peace is not shared, a healthy model for coexistence is not sustainable. The second requirement is reciprocal esteem. An unflinching recognition of the dignity of those across the table or across the globe is what motivates an authentic pursuit for living well together. Peaceful coexistence compels us to refuse and refute ideological or political temptations to dehumanize those with whom we disagree. Healthy debate and disagreement will never forfeit reciprocal esteem.”
Professor Tyler conclude, “Thirdly, we must explore the depths of our different traditions to reveal shared values and beliefs that can root and facilitate this urgent endeavor toward peaceful and constructive coexistence across communities, cultures, and countries. An attitude of genuine tolerance is one such value.”
The Muslim Council of Elders is taking part at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, which runs from 23 to 29 May 2022, with an extensive number of exhibited publications as well as various seminars and discussions at its participating stand.
