The International ‘Islam and the West: Diversity and Integration’ Symposium
- Date: 22 October 2018 - 24 October 2018
- Location : Al-Azhar International Conference Center, Cairo, Egypt
In partnership with Al-Azhar and the Nizami Ganjavi International Center, the Muslim Council of Elders organized an international symposium titled ‘Islam and the West: Diversity and Integration’, held in Cairo from October 22 to 24, 2018. The event was attended by His Eminence Prof. Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and President of the Muslim Council of Elders, along with distinguished intellectuals and public figures from Europe and Asia, and prominent religious, political, and thought leaders, as well as former heads of state and government from around the world. The symposium also featured leading scholars specializing in the relationship between Islam and the West, including Islamic scholars from Western countries.
The international symposium was part of the East-West Dialogue Initiative launched by the Muslim Council of Elders and Al-Azhar in collaboration with global partners such as the World Council of Churches, the Archbishop of Canterbury, and the Community of Sant'Egidio. It aimed to explore the complex relationship between Islam and the West, seeking practical solutions to bridge the divide between Western societies and Muslims living in the West, moving away from the polemic and accusatory narratives often propagated by the media that falsely associate Islam with extremism, violence, and terrorism.
