Former Secretary-General of the Arab League
His Excellency Dr. Nabil Elaraby
His Excellency Dr. Nabil Elaraby served as Secretary-General of the Arab League from 2011 to 2016. He was appointed Foreign Minister of the Arab Republic of Egypt in March 2011 and served as Judge at the International Court of Justice from 2001 to 2006. From 1991 to 1999, he represented Egypt as Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York and was a member of the UN International Law Commission from 1994 to 2001. In June 1996, he served as the President of the UN Security Council.
Dr. Elaraby was also Egypt’s Permanent Representative in Geneva from 1987 to 1991, and served as Legal Advisor and Director of the Legal Affairs and Treaties Department at the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1983 to 1987. He led Egypt’s delegation in the Taba negotiations from 1985 to 1989 and represented Egypt before the International Arbitration Panel on the Taba dispute in 1988. Earlier, he was Egypt’s Ambassador to India from 1981 to 1983 and, in 1978, he served as legal advisor to the Egyptian delegation at the Camp David Conference on peace in the Middle East.
Additionally, Dr. Elaraby was the Chairman of the Board of Trustees at the Cairo Regional Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (CRCICA), where he also served as Director from 2008 to 2011. He earned his PhD in Legal Sciences from New York University Law School in 1971. Dr. Elaraby passed away in August 2024.
