His Excellency Prof. Manuel Castells


Professor of Sociology from 1979 to 2003 before joining the University of Southern California. From 1988 to 1993, he was Professor and Director of the Institute for the Sociology of New Technologies at the Autonomous University of Madrid. From 2001 to 2012, he was Director of the Interdisciplinary Internet Institute at the Open University of Catalonia in Barcelona. He was Director of Research in the Department of Sociology at the University of Cambridge from 2011 to 2018 and is a Fellow of St. John's College, Cambridge. He was also a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Technology and Society at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 2004 to 2009; Distinguished Visiting Professor of Internet Studies at the University of Oxford from 2006 to 2010; and held Kluge Chair in Technology and Society at the U.S. Library of Congress. He is currently a Visiting Professor of Communication at Tsinghua University in Beijing. He has also been a visiting professor at the Universities of Montreal, Católica de Chile, Brasilia, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Geneva, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Boston, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Hitotsubashi University (Tokyo). He has lectured at more than 300 academic institutions in 46 countries.
