Rev. Dr. Martin Junge


General Secretary of the Lutheran World Federation, he holds an honorary Doctor of Theology from Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. Elected by the Lutheran World Federation Council in 2009, he became the first Latin American General Secretary, assuming office on November 1, 2010. In 1996, Rev. Dr. Jung was elected President of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Chile, where he played a pivotal role in stabilizing the church following a leadership crisis. During his tenure, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Chile was instrumental in passing the 1999 law that granted equal legal status to religious organizations in Chile. He actively participated in national ecumenical dialogues, culminating in the 1999 “Mutual Recognition of Baptism” agreement. Additionally, he significantly strengthened regional connections among Lutheran Federation member churches across Latin America.
