- Current General Secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC)
- A minister in the Uniting Presbyterian Church in Southern Africa (UPSA), he served as a delegate on the WCC central committee and at the WCC 9th Assembly in 2006
- He has also served on the board of trustees of the Council for World Mission, the National Executive of the South African Council of Churches and as the first President of the World Communion of Reformed Churches
- He previously served as professor and Dean in the Faculty of Theology and Religion, University of Pretoria
