His Eminence Prof. Dr. Hasan El-Shafei


His Eminence Prof. Dr. Hasan El-Shafei completed his PhD in Islamic Studies in 1977 in the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. He has written ten books in Arabic covering topics like Islamic philosophy, Ilm Al-Kalam (Islamic theology), and Sufism, and has published over thirty research papers in various journals and periodicals in Egypt and internationally. He has edited five heritage texts and translated four books. He has supervised and evaluated dozens of university theses across Egypt, the Arab world, Pakistan, and Malaysia, and he is a member of numerous scientific and cultural bodies worldwide, including the Egyptian Philosophical Society, the Scientific Council for Studies in Manchester, and the Board of Trustees of the International Islamic University in Islamabad. He has authored dozens of publications and research papers.

In February 2012, he was elected President of the Arabic Language Academy, serving until 2020, where he championed Al-Mu’jam Al-Kabeer (The Extensive Arabic Dictionary) project. That same year, he was also elected President of the Union of Arabic Language Academies, a position he still holds today. Additionally, Dr. El-Shafei is a founding member of the Muslim Council of Elders, established in 2014.

His Eminence Prof. Dr. Hasan El-Shafei serves as the President of the Union of Arabic Language Academies and is a distinguished linguist. He was the first Azharite to head the Arabic Language Academy in Cairo. His Eminence also presides over the Arabic linguistic academies and is also a member of the Muslim Council of Elders. Additionally, he is a member of several scientific and cultural bodies worldwide, including the Egyptian Philosophical Society, the Scientific Council for Studies in Manchester, and the Board of Trustees of the International Islamic University in Islamabad. He has served as the Head of the Arabic Language Academy and as Dean of the Faculty of Shariah at the International Islamic University in Islamabad. His Eminence has authored over thirty scientific papers published in journals in Egypt and abroad, edited five historical texts, translated four books, and supervised and reviewed dozens of university theses in Egypt, the Arab world, Pakistan, and Malaysia.
