The Muslim Council of Elders, in collaboration with Al-Azhar, organized the International Conference in Support of Jerusalem, held in Cairo on January 17 and 18, 2018. The conference was attended by His Eminence Prof. Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and President of the Muslim Council of Elders; Palestinian President His Excellency Mahmoud Abbas; His Excellency Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League; His Excellency Marzouq Al-Ghanim, Speaker of the Kuwaiti National Assembly; His Holiness Pope Tawadros II, Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of St. Mark; Rev. Dr. Olav Fykse Tveit, Secretary-General of the World Council of Churches; and a delegation from the anti-Zionist Jewish group Neturei Karta. The event also welcomed numerous presidents, ministers, religious leaders, and representatives from international organizations concerned with the cause of Jerusalem, alongside peace advocates from around the world.
The conference sought to explore practical strategies to reaffirm the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital. It also aimed to oppose attempts to impose spatial and temporal divisions on the Al-Aqsa Mosque, condemn attacks on Islamic and Christian holy sites, resist efforts to alter Jerusalem’s identity, and reject discriminatory measures restricting Muslim access to the Al-Aqsa Mosque.
