Driven by the Muslim Council of Elders' concern for the issues of the Ummah and the conditions for Muslims worldwide, and in response to the escalating persecution of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar and numerous reports of their ongoing exposure to violence, killings, and genocide, the Council organized a conference in cooperation with Al-Azhar. Prompted by a call from His Eminence Prof. Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and President of the Muslim Council of Elders, to address the issue realistically and through constructive dialogue, the conference, titled 'Towards a Civilized Humanitarian Dialogue for the People of Myanmar (Burma)', was held on January 3 and 4, 2017. The event was attended by ambassadors, writers, thinkers, journalists, and youth representatives from Myanmar’s Muslim, Christian, Hindu, and Buddhist communities. Participants discussed the causes of the conflict in Burma, in order to find fundamental solutions to end it and to establish the principles of citizenship and coexistence among its citizens; and to lay down the foundations for peace in Myanmar.
