Dr. Samir Marcus


He is an Honorary Life Member of the Norwegian Academy of Literature and Freedom of Expression, receiving its scientific diploma and annual award in 2004. He served two terms as a member of the National Council for Human Rights after the events of January 25, 2011, and June 30, 2013. In 2013, he was awarded the Arab Network for Tolerance Award as "Man of Tolerance."

He has held several public positions in Egypt with the rank of Minister, including Deputy Governor of Cairo for the Northern Region (August 2011), Assistant to the President for Democratic Transition (August 2012), Supervisor of the Egyptian Civilizational Coordination Authority (July 2014), and Advisor to the Ministry of Culture (January 2016). He also serves as an Advisor to the Center for Coptic Studies at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, a member of the Board of Trustees of Democracy Magazine at Al-Ahram, a Board Member of the Institute for Citizenship and Diversity at the Adyan Foundation in Beirut, and a founding member of the Arab Team for Islamic-Christian Dialogue. He was the Associate Secretary General of the Middle East Council of Churches from 1995 to 2001 and has worked extensively in development planning and evaluation.

His published works include Citizenship and Change (2006), The Other, Dialogue and Citizenship (2005), The American Empire: The Trilogy of Wealth, Religion and Power (2003), and Protection and Punishment: The West and the Religious Question in the Middle East (2000). His upcoming publications include The Middle Class and January 25, Copts and Muslims: From the Authority of Dominance to the State of Citizenship, Arab Christians: What Future?, The Secret Code of Egyptian Bureaucracy, and Social Justice from a Citizenship Perspective.

He writes regularly for Al-Ahram and Al-Masry Al-Youm.
