Professor of Contemporary History at La Terza University in Rome. An expert in contemporary humanist thought, he is a trusted voice on the international scene. Several universities have awarded him honorary degrees in recognition of his historical and cultural merits. He is internationally recognized for having founded the Community of Sant’Egidio in 1968. In addition to its social commitment and numerous development projects in the Southern Hemisphere, Sant’Egidio is known for its commitment to peace and dialogue. On 18 November 2004, he was awarded the International Balzan Prize for Humanity, Peace and Brotherhood among Peoples. On 21 May 2009, he was awarded the Charlemagne Prize. On 16 November 2011, he joined Prime Minister Mario Monti’s government as minister for international cooperation without portfolio.
