He has served on numerous committees, including the International Theological Commission (until 1985), the International Methodist/Roman Catholic Dialogue Committee (until 1991), the General Secretariat Council of the Synod of Bishops in the Vatican, and the Standing Committee of the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches. He was made a Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church on November 24, 2012.
He was President of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria from March 1999 to March 2006 and led the Association of Episcopal Conferences of West Africa (AECAWA) from August 2001 to August 2004. He has been a member of the Nigerian Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) since 1999. From June 2007 to June 2010, he served as President of the Christian Association of Nigeria. Since August 2019, he has been the Honorary President of the World Council of Religions for Peace (RfP).
He has received various awards, including the National Order of Honour of the Commander of the Niger (CON), awarded by then-President Olusegun Obasanjo on December 18, 2001. In October 2012, Pax Christi International presented him with the Peace Prize in Brussels, and he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize the same year for his efforts in fostering religious harmony, peace, and justice in Africa.
