Third Session: Social Media and Hate Media Speech: Regulating Technology
- Date: 03:15 PM - 04:45 PM
- Location : Amman - Jordan
The third session, moderated by Egyptian journalist Tamer Amin, focused on the issue of hate speech on social media. Amin called for the establishment of ethical guidelines for social media usage and encouraged the involvement of young influencers on social media in the fight against hate speech. Sameer Al Hayari, founder of Ammon News, criticized the absence of a clear definition of hate speech and highlighted the Arab world’s lack of readiness to navigate digital space.
Journalist Abdullah Talafha noted that social media platforms have started making significant efforts to monitor content, whether through artificial intelligence technology or direct human intervention by thousands of editors. During the session, Moroccan journalist Imane Aghoutane called for the enactment of enforceable laws governing social media publishing, which strike a balance between combating hate speech and respecting freedom of expression.
